British Netherlands All-Party Parliamentary Group Visit to the Netherlands (16/09/2009)

British Netherlands All-Party Parliamentary Group Visit to the Netherlands

On Wednesday 9 September five delegates of the British Netherlands All-Party Parliamentary Group came to the Netherlands to meet their Dutch counterparts and to strengthen the bilateral relations between the Netherlands and the UK. On Thursday, Parliamentarians from both countries were welcomed to Rotterdam by the city’s Deputy Mayor, Mr. Vervat. After an official welcome and a discussion on the impact of the global economic crisis on local policies and developments, the MPs were introduced to the Rooms for Opportunities Project. This initiative offers dedicated housing facilities to young people who need support and coaching to solve their problems and to be able to finish school. The MPs met a number of participants of the project who were happy to talk about their own personal experiences.

In the afternoon, the party paid a visit to the Port of Rotterdam. The Port plays a vital role to the city as well as the wider Dutch economy. The MPs were given a presentation on the latest economic figures, the Port’s relation to the European hinterland and its initiatives to expand its operations by creating the ‘second Maasvlakte’. The MPs also went to see the Stadshavens, which is a part of the Port’s industrial land that is to be transformed into a thriving, modern environment for people to live and work in. This very successful visit to Rotterdam ended with a boat trip on the Nieuwe Maze so that the delegates were given the opportunity to get an impression of the Port’s operations and its size.
